Levoit Vital 200S review: A smart air purifier and three HEPA filters

Updated August 28, 2023

The Levoit Vital 200S (available at Amazon for $189.99) is a total package. Not only does this smart air purifier rank among the best we've tested, but it also has ample filter options, cleaning modes, and intuitive features to improve indoor air quality. For example, it monitors light levels and automatically adjusts fan noise to ensure you aren't sacrificing sleep quality for clean air. The only drawback is that it lacks the design features of other models, like the stylish Coway Airmega Icon. If you don't care about aesthetics, then the Vital 200S is a top choice for an air purifier that delivers fresh air with fantastic features.

The Levoit Vital 200S is ideal for larger rooms or homes with an open plan layout. It delivers high-end filtering performance without excessive fan noise.

At 20 inches tall and 16 inches wide the Vital is large enough to stand alone on the ground.

The built-in air quality sensors give you real-time feedback on air quality via the VeSync app, as well as a sophisticated level of control.

Alternate filter types will empower you to tune your Levoit air purifier to perfectly match your air purifying needs. These include the standard filter, a pet filter, and a toxin filter. There’s also a smoke filter that will help reduce wildfire smoke indoors.

The Levoit Vital 200S takes the guesswork out of determining just what settings your indoor habitat needs to become more healthy. The device includes sensors for both air quality monitoring and light level monitoring. Even if you don’t bother with the smart features, the purifier combines the data from the sensors to run efficiently in automatic mode.

When the air purifier senses a change in air quality, it responds by increasing the fan speed to filter air more quickly. As light levels wane in the evening, the filter automatically switches to a less noisy night-time mode with reduced fan settings and a dimmed display.

The VeSync app will have your back with everything you need.

Although neither the app nor smart integration with Alexa or Google Assistant is essential for the Vital’s performance, these features enhance your purifier.

Rather than its own app, Levoit connects to the VeSync app through Wi-Fi. The app allows you to enter a customizable sleep schedule that progresses through multiple settings and modes. For example, you might start with Turbo fan mode to preemptively clean more air, then have the purifier drop the fan level to its lowest setting for slumber inducing white noise.

You can also set the purifier to a daily schedule that includes more detail than the timer options available on the physical control panel.

You won't need to worry about excessive pet hair.

The Vital includes several pet-specific features that combine to purge fur from the air, remove dander, and eliminate odors. For example, pet mode, found in the app, alternates the fan speed between medium and high settings to quickly clear pet dander and odors.

Pet mode isn’t the only part of the Vital that handles furry friends well. It features a washable pre-filter that’s particularly helpful for pet owners, as it intercepts hair and other larger particles before they clog up the much more delicate activated carbon HEPA particle filter. This pre-filter extends the time between HEPA filter changes giving you better filter life.

As well as the usual grid-style air intake on the front of the unit, there’s also a wide U-shaped air valve. This intake is large enough to avoid pet hair blockages that can build up on the outside of some air purifiers.

The overall noise levels for the Vital 200S are impressively low, but in sleep mode with the fan turned down, it’s virtually silent. The wide U-shaped air inlet also draws air flow through the purifier more readily, so it filters effectively without running fast, noisy fan speeds.

Different households mean different filter types will come into play, and they are all useful and easy to use.

The Vital 200S comes with a standard general use Levoit air filter that filters airborne particles down to 0.3 microns or less. It is also effective at chemical absorption.

The Vital 200S ranks in the top 10 of all purifiers we’ve tested when it comes to removing particles and volatile organic compounds.

We lab tested all of the 200S’ filter options and were impressed by the results. All are true HEPA filters, with different specializations.

The odor absorbing pet filter performed as promised, clearing up airborne chemicals 17% faster than the standard filter. The toxin absorber filter also lived up to the claims, removing chemicals an impressive 34% faster than the standard filter.

It will be hard for this design to fit in with the rest of the household.

The Levoit Vital 200S doesn’t stand out aesthetically. Nor does it offer much choice, with only the one colorway and finish. With a plastic frame and vent layout that’s similar to many other air purifier brands, its overall design is relatively basic.

If you’re into design you might find yourself attracted to other air purifiers like the Coway Airmega Icon that offers a more premium visual design, with curved lines and a sleek fabric cover.

The Blueair DustMagnet 5410i is similarly aesthetic, and doubles as a side table that will be easy to blend into your home. Even the affordably priced Winix 5500-2 comes in multiple colors.

The Levoit Vital 200S’ impressive performance and feature-set make it one of the best air purifiers on the market right now.

The design provides effective filtering for larger indoor spaces without subjecting you to the blare of excessively loud fan noise. The smart features and alternate filter types allow you to tailor the Vital 200S to your personal needs.

The air purifier could certainly look better and come with more design options and color schemes, but if you value functionality over form, then you’ll appreciate its excellent HEPA-type filter performance. Indeed, at its basic job of removing air pollution, it ranked in the top 10 of all the air filters we’ve tested, doing a great job with smaller particles as well as bigger ones.

The Levoit Vital 200S is a workhorse that will do a wonderful job in most homes.

This air purifier is easily customizable and will handle even the toughest pet odors and hair.
